Pre-Paid Credit Cards for Students
Most students find it difficult these days to get a credit card, and even if you can, there’s always the chance that you will spend more than you can afford and so find yourself in more debt than you bargained for. One very good option is to go for a pre-paid credit card instead.
A pre-paid credit card is a card that lets you load money on to it, and then can be used in exactly the same way as a credit card and in all the places that a regular credit card can be used. For a student the advantages of having a credit card are great in that they allow you to buy things from places where only credit cards are accepted, but this way of course there’s no worry about interest fees and having to pay loads of money back, as you only put onto the card what you can afford to.
Like with a credit card, you get a full breakdown of what you’re spending it on, but there’s no debt risk. There’s also no credit check needed, which means that you can get a card without worrying about not having much in the way of a credit history (most of us don’t build a credit history before we head off to college or university, so this is very useful).
For students heading off on a gap year, or who are studying abroad this sort of card is ideal too. Parents can load them up from here in the UK for you, and you then have the money at your fingertips without the worry of it being stolen easily either. They offer a better rate than travellers cheques often as well.
Even if you’re studying here in the UK it can be helpful having something like this where mum or dad can load money onto it for you. It means that they can help you pay easily for books, food and other expenses.
An added advantage of course is that if you want to go to a gig or other big event with your friends these days, it’s often easier and cheaper to book the tickets if you have a credit card. The same applies for travelling by train and coach, often tickets are cheaper when purchased online and your pre-paid credit card will come in handy here too.
