Splash Plastic was the very first prepaid card available in the UK. It was launched in 2001 and it’s still one of the most widely recognised cards available. Unlike most prepay cards that are now available, it uses the Maestro brand making it useable in around nine million locations world wide, and can also be used in ATM’s world wide that display the Cirrus or Maestro brand logo.

The card comes in two colour designs, and the application process is very easy with 100% approval for all applicants who are over the age of 10 making it very easy to get one of these cards.

The Pros:
You won’t need a credit check.
You don’t need a bank account.
Application process is easy and you can apply online.
100% approval of all applicants above the age of 10. (If you’re 13 or below you will need parental consent).
Maestro branding means no charge to load funds back onto the card from gaming/gambling websites.
You can top up the card from your wages for free.
Multiple top up methods – Debit card, Credit card, SMS text message, 360money e-voucher available from PayPoint retailers, via the post office and via BACS.
Excellent alerts functions let you keep totally up to date with your balance and top ups.
You can add up to 4 additional card holders so that a max of five family members can each have a card on the same account. (They do not all have to reside in the UK either).
No monthly fee.
Cashback program has been set up for this card.

The Cons:
Usage fees are higher than many other prepaid cards.
The card is subject to top up fees as well as usage fees.
Maestro isn’t as widely accepted world wide as Mastercard and Visa – Particularly on international websites.

Summary:
A useful product if you are wanting a pay as you go style card for emergency use, or one that will not be used very often, also if you intend to use a lot of the stores which are part of the splash cashback programme. However if you’re looking for a pre paid card that will be used frequently, or where you’ll be buying regularly over the internet from international retailers then there are better cards with lower fees available.
