Why use a prepaid credit card

In these unstable financial times, a lot of people who have previously used standard credit cards are now finding that this method of spending is becoming imprudent for them. The escalating bills can ruin credit ratings, and trying to get everything back under control can leave people in financially tight situations.

Prepaid credit cards allow people to discipline themselves easily regarding the amount they spend because if you don’t have it in the first place, you cannot apply it to the card. They don’t however stop you from using the internet as a shopping mall which means that you can still take advantage of the lower prices that are to be found there.

Through a prepaid credit card, you have the same functionality as with a conventional credit card, you can purchase goods or services, and make payments as you normally would, but you cannot go above the limit of the money you already have, as you are the one who transfers the money from your bank account on to the card before you begin. There is now no risk of overspending, and there will be no nasty shock at the end of the month as there will be no bill to pay then.

Another advantage to using a prepaid credit card is that if you won’t be asked about your existing credit history, so that the method of payment is available to everyone who wishes to use it regardless of what a credit check might show.

Prepaid credit cards have the added advantage of being far less subject to fraud. With an ordinary credit card, someone who gets hold of the details could run up a massive bill before the company and you found out about it and stopped them. With a pre-pay card however, there is only ever the amount of money on the card that you’ve chosen to put there, so that the most they could steal would be the balance on the card. What this means is that if you keep the balance reasonably small, you reduce hugely your risks of being defrauded.
